Shakila Marando, Owner of DOULAS by the BAY
Trained Birth & Postpartum Doula, Certified Lactation Educator(CLE), Sleep Consultant
I truly believe I was destined to be a doula. As a child, watching my mother work her magic as a midwife in our native Tanzania, I learned the importance of helping families get the proper emotional, physical and mental support they needed to prosper with their newborn.
Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area over 20 years ago, I have worked with almost two hundred families as a postpartum doula and a Certified Lactation Educator (CLE). I’ve worked closely with twins and premature babies, gaining valuable insight and expertise into working with these special infant populations.
People often ask how I have the energy to help so many families. The truth is that helping families succeed with their newborns sustains me and gives me life. It is my passion. That’s undoubtedly why my practice is recognized as one of the Bay Area’s leading doula resources. When we work together, I focus on empowering you and your family in the days immediately following your childbirth. My main concern is the ongoing success for you and your entire family for many weeks ahead.
To ensure you get the best care, I’ve honed my skills with certifications and training from prestigious national institutes. I also believe in staying abreast of current practices, which is why I’ve chosen to continue my education by taking courses in early childhood education and psychology at San Francisco State University. You can never know too much about children and how best to foster their development.
When I’m not working with families, I’m busy raising my own. Those two beautiful girls you see in the picture are my little angels, Seshela and Furaha. They keep me pretty busy. But whenever I get a chance, I also do volunteer work as a sleep consultant, birth and postpartum doula, and breastfeeding educator. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, running, dancing, cooking, reading, writing, snowboarding, skydiving, and golfing.
